We have an exciting announcement.
We are releasing our fourth imprimatur: The Pibroch Wiki. It is now available at wiki.altpibroch.com.
A wiki is a technology that encourages collaboration: it is designed to allow users to edit content, keeping information alive and fresh. The most famous wiki on the planet is Wikipedia, of course. But there are literally millions of private and public wikis in existence. The reason for this is simple: it is the best way to maintain living documentation. What this means is, new information can easily be added to existing documents, and new entries can be created at will.
Think of a time when you would purchase an encyclopedia: it was a remarkably informative investment, a resource of great breadth that you could easily pick up and review.
But as a textual document, over time it grew out of date: information in it was old, new areas of research were necessarily missing. And while it was easy to search and look up materials, indexes were not necessarily complete.
What makes a wiki powerful is that, like an encyclopedia, it can become a definitive resource for a massive breadth (and depth) of information. But that information does not have to be stale: new information can be entered into the articles, without users having to purchase updated books for volumes. New contributions can be created, as well. Additionally, key-word searches return everything relevant on the site, not just a few articles.
We’re starting out quite small right now. Of keen interest to all of you will be pages we set up for the participants in the Shasta Piping Society Original Piobaireachd Music Competition: https://wiki.altpibroch.com/p/Shasta_Piping_Society_2017
Over time, however, our hope is for this to become a digital encyclopedia of all things pibroch. In order to do this, we will be building a number of pages and entries over the years, with subject ranging from people, places, events. tunes, Gaelic history and culture, and more.
In order to succeed, however, we need collaborators. If you have articles you wish to submit, notify us. If you wish to become an editor to help us grow and maintain the site, contact us. If you have compositions you would like us to make available, just let us know. If you have thoughts for subjects to write about, or links to sites you would like to see: drop us a line.
We realize this is a new idea for many of you, and certainly for the world of pibroch. But we believe that the potential here is limitless.
We hope you will join us in creating the definitive encyclopedia site for all things pibroch!
